(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2017-11-30) Fernández Romero, Sergio; Escot Bocanegra, David; Poyatos Martinez, David; Añón Cancela, M.; López Rodríguez, P.; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO); Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI)
The rise in the utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the last years has also brought concerns in terms of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) regulation of these platforms. Depending on the nature and operations of the UAVs, they are being required to go through the same processes than an aircraft EMC certification of aircraft involves a wide variety of tests. This paper deals with two aircraft low level coupling tests, namely, Low Level Direct Drive (LLDD) and Low Level Swept Fields (LLSF) and compares the results obtained in two different sites. On one hand, an Open Area Test Site (OATS) will be employed and, on the other hand, a Reverberation Chamber (RC) will be the other facility examined. The object under test will be a representative part of an UAV.

(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2022-09-23) Ramos Somolinos, D.; Plaza Gallardo, Borja; Cidrás Estévez, José; Díaz Acosta, Laura; Gómez de Francisco, Patricia; Añón Cancela, M.; Frövel, Malte; Poyatos Martinez, David; Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI)
The increasing number of electronic devices on board and the use of novel composite materials in the aerospace industry create a harsh electromagnetic environment that must be studied. In this article, a UAV demonstrator (DEMO-E3) with different test cases is evaluated through the low-level swept field test following a nested resonant chambers approach, which is framed under the high intensity radio frequency measurements. The aim is to analyze the difference in terms of the shielding effectiveness of the enclosure considering the different materials and apertures of each test sample. Some of the test cases had been previously measured independently, according to the IEC 61000-4-21 standard, while in this study, they are incorporated into the demonstrator and former results are used as a comparison.

Validation procedure of low level coupling tests on real aircraft structure
(IEEE Xplore, 2012-12-31) Fernández Romero, Sergio; López Morales, Andrés; Añón Cancela, M.; Gutierrez, Guadalupe G.; European Commission (EC)
This paper describes the analysis of the experimental test results obtained during the low level swept coupling (LLSC) and low level direct drive (LLDD) tests on FALCON 7X horizontal tail plane provided by EADS-CASA. These techniques are evaluated during the aircraft high intensity radiated field (HIRF) certification process and in the scope of European Community's FP7 HIRF SE project. The analysis of low level test results shall be performed to estimate the influence of the test setup with particular regard to the in-flight coupling configuration. For this reason, finite difference time domain (FDTD) 3D computations have been used to determine the relationship between free field external radiation and skin current in different illumination angles and polarizations. Finally, after validation by comparison of the measured and computed skin current, measured bundle current are related to measured skin currents, to provide the transfer function link to the external field.

Time Domain Simulation of Common Mode Ferrite Chokes at System Level
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2023-09-11) Gascón Bravo, Alberto; García, S. G.; Muñoz Manterola, Alejandro; Añón Cancela, M.; Moreno, Roberto; Tekbaş, Kenan; Angulo, L. D.; Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN); European Commission (EC); Universidad de Granada (UGR)
This article introduces a comprehensive methodology for analyzing common-mode (CM) ferrite chokes in time-domain (TD) methods, employing lumped dispersive loads, and validates it through a typical test setup for cable crosstalk assessment. The analysis begins with the experimental characterization of CM choke material properties using a coaxial line fixture to obtain its constitutive parameters. Subsequently, a simplified lumped dispersive convolutional model is obtained, representing the impedance of the ferrite when placed on a location on the cable. The first approach adopts a multiconductor transmission line (MTL) model for the cables, solving them by a finite-difference (FDTD) space-time scheme. The second approach utilizes the classical full-wave Yee-FDTD method in conjunction with the thin-wire Holland model for cables. The accuracy of the proposed methods is evaluated by comparing simulations performed with MTL-FDTD and Holland-Yee FDTD, to experimental measurements, and results obtained with the the frequency-domain finite element method using a 3-D model of the ferrite with its constitutive parameters. Finally, the validity and performance of the methodologies are critically discussed.

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained.

SIVA UAV: A Case Study for the EMC Analysis of Composite Air Vehicles
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2017-01-31) Cabello, M. R.; Fernández Romero, Sergio; Pous Solà, M.; Pascual Gil, E.; Angulo, L. D.; López, Patricia; Riu, Pere J.; Gutierrez, G. G.; Mateos, D.; Poyatos Martinez, David; Fernández Chimeno, M.; Álvarez, Jesús; Pantoja, M. The increased use of carbon-fiber composites in unmanned aerial vehicles is a challenge for their EMC assessment by numerical solvers. For accurate and reliable simulations, numerical procedures should be tested not only for individual components, but also within the framework of complete systems. With this aim, this paper presents a benchmark test case based on experimental measurements coming from direct-current injection tests in the SIVA unmanned air vehicle, reproduced by a numerical finite-difference-time-domain solver that employs a new subgridding scheme to treat lossy composite thin panels. Validation was undertaken by applying the feature selective validation method, which quantifies the agreement between experimental and numerical data.

Comparing Open Area Test Site and Resonant Chamber for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle's High-Intensity Radiated Field Testing
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2018-01-18) Fernández Romero, S.; López Rodríguez, P.; Escot Bocanegra, D.; Poyatos Martinez, David; Añón Cancela, M.; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO); Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI)
Open area test sites (OATS) have been traditionally employed for aircraft electromagnetic compatibility certification tests because of the large size of these items. In this regard, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged in the last years and, albeit being sometimes notably smaller, yet they have to accomplish for the same certification process. This paper investigates into the possibility of using a reverberation chamber for performing two aircraft low-level coupling tests, namely, low-level direct drive and low-level swept fields, and compares the results with those obtained in an OATS, in both cases using a representative part of a UAV.
